The recent announcement of 18 community batteries in Perth and Bunbury is a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future for Western Australia. However, it raises the question: is this enough, or do we need a more comprehensive approach to renewable energy adoption? The answer, in my opinion, lies in the call for a legislated target for renewable energy uptake. While the community batteries are a welcome development, they represent a short-term solution rather than a long-term strategy. The state's lack of a renewable energy target or equivalent is a critical issue that needs addressing. Without a clear and binding target, the momentum for cleaner energy and batteries may falter, and the state risks falling behind in the global transition to renewable energy. This is a missed opportunity for WA to solidify its position as a leader in the energy transition. The state's grid storage capabilities have improved significantly, but this alone is not enough. A legislated target would provide the necessary certainty for investors, businesses, and the community, ensuring a more robust and sustainable energy system. It would also encourage innovation and investment in renewable energy technologies, driving down costs and increasing efficiency. The falling price of energy storage is a positive development, but it should not be the sole driver of renewable energy adoption. A legislated target would create a more stable and predictable environment for the energy sector, fostering growth and development. In my view, the state government should set a renewable energy target for 2035 and beyond, with interim targets to ensure a steady transition. This would not only benefit the environment but also the economy and the community. The community batteries in Bunbury and Perth are a step in the right direction, but they should be seen as a part of a larger strategy. A legislated target would provide the necessary framework for a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Western Australia.
